We got Chickens
It has happened.
I am not sure I am forever destined to be a city girl (well woman)
Building our house in Tonga it has opened up the possibilities for me in that i could live differently.
The idea that we could live a more self-sufficient way of life appealed to me. I so want this to be the case for our Tonga house... To be totally self-sufficient.
The difficulty is I want to start implementing this straight away, but i can't as we don't live in Tonga yet. (even though i have already started and brought two cows)
I came home from Tonga depleted cause it was back to the grind of work and parenting.
Then I saw a TikTok from a creator (who i cannot remember the name of) she was talking about how she also wanted a more self-sufficient life but was not able to but then one day asked herself how could have that life while still in the city.
She made some changes, moved to the outskirts of town so her outlook was farmland and she had a slightly bigger property where she could grow veggies and have some chickens (3 to be exact)
Of course, this had me thinking - What would I need to do to have more of the life I wanted right now?
The idea of having fresh eggs every day straight out of our backyard is thrilling to me. To be able to hear chickens calling to each other in the morning while I drink my coffee.
It's not about the eggs though, it's about teaching my children to care for things, look after them and feed them and learn to be self-sufficient.
For us as a family to go out in the morning and collect eggs before our day starts is something that I'm looking forward to.
Of I went to Pinterest to search chicken coops - I pinned all the ones I was inspired by and then sent my ideas to my poor husband!
He set to work building the coop - the first one we built I think we did a pretty alright job. It's not finished as I want to decorate it.
Unfortunately, we all have varying ideas on how we want our house to look!
One of us wants it tastefully done - White and Blue - Sophistication!
Someone on the other hand want it to be bright bold and loud!
Wonder who will win?
And before we know it our chickens arrived! Our ladies are pullets, refined, and beautiful. They are a soft silvery grey colour which I love.
They love their new coop and have had a ball roaming free in the Taro!
It has been so heartwarming to see our youngest love on the chickens, taking them their food, giving them treats, and collecting the eggs! She loves getting the eggs and it is a fight to get them out of her hands!
Step one of bringing my Tongan life to the city. Small garden and a few chickens make me feel like I am living off the land on a tropical island. (for now)
